Every year, millions of managers and supervisors get promoted into management positions without learning how to successfully lead a team. As a result, many of them find themselves at the top of the corporate ladder while lacking the requisite training to lead. And even for those who have been leaders for a while, they may not truly understand why building their skills as managers should be their number one priority.

Aimed primarily at helping first-line supervisors and mid-level managers overcome leadership challenges, “My Battlefield, Your Office” is a senior-management must read. This book can also help up-and-coming managers who are taking on an increasing amount of responsibility where strong leadership skills are necessary.

Author Justin Constantine, a Marine lieutenant colonel who led a team of Marines in Iraq, shares invaluable lessons that are critical to surviving and succeeding, both on the frontline and in the workplace. His biggest personal challenge was overcoming an injury that should have killed him a calamitous gunshot wound to the head by an enemy sniper in Iraq.

We all experience adversity in our lives, at home, as leaders in our communities and in the workplace. Constantine’s Marine training helped him survive and thrive and he shares these survival tips in “My Battlefield, Your Office.” Through frontline analogies and specific personal experiences, Constantine translates the leadership skills he gained in the Marine Corps and while on the frontline into everyday language business leaders can understand.

“My Battlefield, Your Office” includes 15 impactful and easy-to-read chapters. Each section focuses on specific leadership skills and leaves the reader with key takeaways by laying out five guiding principles 1) Why taking care of your team should be your number one priority; 2) Defining what it means to lead from the front; 3) How change means opportunity; 4) Why it’s okay to ask for help; and 5) Why taking responsibility for your actions is key.

My Dad was a Marine and survivor of the battle at the Frozen Chosin (one of the "Chosin Few"), He was also a senior executive at Western Electric/AT&T. I learned a lot of what Justin discusses from my Dad, but since we don't always listen to our parents, it would have been great to have this blueprint for leadership decades ago when I began my own journey.

As Justin describes, many technical professionals get promoted to management without effective training. I've seen this and experienced it. This book should be a must-read in leadership training, from the front-line to the executive leadership.

The book is well written and an easy read. I appreciate not only how Justin combines his academic, private sector and military experience, but also summarizes each chapter with some key takeaways.

An incredibly poignant personal story drives the narrative of this exceptional book on leadership and management. Justin Constantine was shot in the head by a sniper and severely wounded while serving as a Marine in Iraq. During a long, painful, and miraculous recovery, Justin drew on his training and used it to shape his own approach toward healing; he also reflected deeply on leadership and the human condition. From this experience, Justin derived the sage insights and practical wisdom that form the substance of his message. In addition the excellent content of the book, indeed beyond it, is the inspirational positivity that emanates from each page. Every reader will reinspect what misfortune he laments in his own life, reconsider which obstacles he considers insurmountable, and reexamine the attitude with which he regards everything.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Justin for over a decade and am privileged to have served as a Marine over the same period as he. I knew Justin before he was hit. When I first saw him after he got out of the hospital, I was overwhelmed with sadness and empathy. . .even pity. That was the last time I felt pity for Justin; since then, it's been nothing but pride and awe. Justin has inspired me for years and this book distills what I witnessed from afar into a clear and powerful message. Read the book and, if you ever get the chance, see him speak.
I've had the pleasure of knowing Justin since we were in high school together. His leadership abilities were evident then and to see his ongoing perseverance through incredibly difficult circumstances (which most of us couldn't even imagine) has been nothing short of inspiring. What I most admire about Justin has been his ability to overcome and adapt - both physically and mentally. Faced with obvious physical challenges, Justin chooses to spend the majority of his time talking about what lurks beneath the surface. I would argue that takes even more courage as we expect our Marines to be tough and if they have a few scars - that should be expected - but don't get soft on me and talk about emotions! Well, Justin hits those issues head on and provides some great examples in this book of how to address any insecurities or weakness you might have and to turn that into a positive opportunity to grow as a leader.

I always find it interesting when people write books about leadership but have little to no credentials to speak of. While they may be a great writer, I prefer to learn from someone who has walked the walked, suffered along his/her path and then driven themselves to success against all odds.

Whether you're a fan of the military or a Buddhist monk, there's something for everyone to learn in reading this book. I appreciate that it hits on several tangible issues with key takeaways for you to digest and apply in your own life and set of circumstances.

Semper Fi!
Justin Constantine has done it! This book offers current and aspiring managers a fresh perspective on leadership and what it takes to become a top caliber leader. Justin has been able to transform his experiences battling back from the horrific injuries he sustained in Iraq into leadership lessons for us all. This book is a must read for all current and aspiring managers. Thank you Justin for never giving up and for sharing this wonderful book with all of us who want to be great and not just good leaders.
Justin's insight as a Veteran business owner will provide you with an incredible look into a true business leaders mind. Justin has given more then most to our country and he continues to serve all by providing valuable advice that he has learned from operational experience that is just as valuable to both Veterans and civilians. Learn from a tested leader who leads from the front.
